Consciousness

Consciousness

What do you understand by the word consciousness? What does it mean to be conscious? Those who are familiar with meditation might have an idea what I am talking about. Consciousness if I may describe it simply is being present in every moment as it happens. In the East they talk a lot about being here now. They have practiced this for centuries and it is a concept that the West leaning world needs to embrace to have a fuller experience of life.

Consciousness savors every moment as it happens. It is about getting absorbed into what is happening right here, right now and not allowing your mind to get distracted by anything else. Consciousness does not concern itself with the moment that is gone or the next moment. It is only focused on this moment. When a conscious person is eating his all focus is on the food he is eating. He doesn’t think about what he will eat tomorrow or what he ate yesterday. He learns to enjoy what he is doing right now.

A conscious person sees the wonder of the ordinary because he pays attention to it. He acts with the innocence and curiosity of a child because children are some of the most conscious people alive in any age. In our adult lives we miss out on life because we are either thinking of what has been or what will be. Rarely do we find ourselves in the moment yet life happens in the moment. When was the last time you took time to savor the beauty of the clouds as they move across the sky? Or even the clarity of the blue sky? When was the last time you saw beauty in the neighborhood you live in? Right now, there is beauty all around you if only you pay attention. To be conscious is to be aware of what is to the exclusion of everything else. Your perception of God’s blessing in your life will change dramatically when you begin to live consciously.

It is more like what the bible speaks of when it encourages us to walk in the spirit or walk by faith. It happens as we learn to live moment by moment. Again when you look at children, they have zero concerns about what will happen the next moment. They are completely absorbed by what is going on around them in this moment to the exclusion of everything else. They have no time to remain stuck on what is gone. They let bygones be bygones and simply think about how to make the most of this present moment. They are not overly concerned for tomorrow for they believe tomorrow will take care of itself.

The Best Things are Free

The Best Things are Free

Do you believe in the statement above? When you think about it, you realize that it is a profound truth. What’s better than the air we breathe? And what about just that ability to breathe? It is only in extreme cases that we are forced to buy oxygen and need assisted breathing. For the majority of us breathing is such a natural thing that we take it for granted.

The same argument can be made about many different things in our lives. Life itself is a gift that comes our way without our having to do much to receive it. You might think it was your parent’s doing but ask yourself how many married people are trying to have a child without success. That you were conceived and carried through gestation is a miracle you played no part in. that you weren’t a still birth nor needed specialized care in your early days has nothing to do with you. The best things are free.

I will talk about your health for a moment here. To enjoy good health is a massive blessing not to be underestimated. Wellness is costly but health is a gift. That all your systems are functioning in perfect balance and harmony is no mean thing. Illness is an abnormality because our default setting is one of health. Your nutrition and lifestyle might have something to do with keeping you healthy according to science but you can bear me witness that there are people you know who are doing everything right yet they are bogged down by health issues left, right and center. So it’s not really about what we do though we need to take responsibility for our lives and the things we can control. Health like all good things is free. Healthcare is not.

There is a song that says money can’t buy me love. Many pop artists have gone on and on about love and I am reminded of Jennifer Lopez’s Love don’t cost a thing. Absolutely. If you need to earn my love, then it’s no love at all. Arrangements are costly. Money can buy me attention and many other things but love flows from a well so deep that money cannot reach. Whether it is a mother’s love for her child or a spouse’s love for her partner. If it is genuine, it cannot be bought or sold. The best things are free.

Choices are free as well. We are at liberty to choose which way to go-at least a majority of us are. And choice is such beautiful thing because it affords opportunities to shape the direction of our lives. Life is actually a series of choices we make as we go along. Very few people if any can say they have no choice what to do. Despite the desperation of your situation, you have a choice to make about which way to go.

The next time you are thinking about how much you are blessed, forget for a moment the things that cost money and focus on the better things that are free. I could go on and on about many other things that are freely given to us but that would deny you an opportunity to participate in this conversation. What else can you add to the list above? Share in the comments below all the beautiful things which are free.

Don’t miss an opportunity to delve deeper into this conversation by getting yourself a copy of Blessed to be a blessing as soon as it is out. The long wait is almost over. To be among the first recipients you can order the book by calling or texting +254725832477.

What is That in Your Hand?

What is that in your hand?

Exodus 4:2 So the Lord said to him, ‘what is that in your hand?’
Many times what we need to make progress is well within our reach yet we don’t realize it. In the scripture reference above, Moses was conversing with God concerning the deliverance of the children of Israel. He was showing how ill equipped he was to carry out the task when out of the blue God asks him-what is that in your hand?

Like Moses, each one of us has a few things within our reach which we can use to make progress on the things that need to get done but like him we are blinded to them and their potential. Moses had carried this rod with him for a long time and used it exclusively for taking care of the flocks. He didn’t know that this rod was capable of so much more if only he changed his perception of what it was.

The very same rod that used to guide the flocks now was capable of working signs and wonders in the presence of pharaoh. On being stretched it parted the Red Sea. In the wilderness he used the same rod to strike the rock and it brought forth water. This rod was transformed into such a potent weapon when Moses looked at it differently.

This is a challenge for you to begin looking at what you have in your hands differently. How much more are you capable of accomplishing if you change your perception of what you have with you? We waste our lives waiting for when everything will fall into place before we do what we need to do. The truth is things will never fall into place at the same time. You have to make do with what you have and make the most of it.

So the question is what is that you have in your hands? What can you see around your life right now that can be put to great use? What do you need to change your perception about so it becomes capable of doing so much more?
In my upcoming book, Blessed to be a Blessing, I share a lot about the many things you have going for you which you can put to good use. Make sure to secure yourself a copy by letting me know through my DM.
